There
are around twenty Drama and six Operatic/Musical groups in Wirral,
but few have their own premises. The Gladstone Theatre is one
of only three purpose-built theatres in the area, and is home
to two of the leading societies - The Port Sunlight Players
and Bebington Dramatic Society.
PORT SUNLIGHT PLAYERS
The
Players were formed in 1920.
Their first production was ‘Yeomen of the Guard’.
By 1922 they began to include plays in their seasons.
These days, the annual Pantomime and Musical are two
of the highlights of the season.
Comedy, drama and a summer variety show complete their
activities. The Players enter both full length and
one-act festivals.

PORT SUNLIGHT YOUTH GROUP
This
is a flourishing group, developing talent from the ages of 5
to 17 and can be a stepping stone into the senior society.
Performance opportunities arise throughout the year and
training is available in most theatre disciplines - backstage,
technical and wardrobe.

BEBINGTON DRAMATIC
SOCIETY
This well established Drama Group became members of the Gladstone Theatre
Trust in May 2001. From
September they will perform 4 plays a year at the Gladstone. Many of the Group began their ‘acting life’
at the Gladstone and are looking forward to coming back home.
Their history will be added to this section shortly.
We wish them a very warm welcome.

THE FRIENDS OF THE GLADSTONE
THEATRE
This group was formed under the patronage of Dame Dorothy Tutin to
bring together people who loved the experience of ‘Theatre’
and the Gladstone in particular but did not wish to perform
on stage. Voluntary help is always needed when running
a 459 seat theatre which has only a 6 week shut down for maintenance
work during the summer. We
have a year round need for auditorium stewards, fire stewards,
bar staff, ices, teas and coffee servers as well as willing
helpers on the technical, stage and wardrobe teams.
We need people willing to give time to the administration
teams. The Friends are
the third arm of the Theatre Trust with equal membership rights
plus early booking and concessionary ticket prices.
